Patriotic Layered Jello
Patriotic Layered Jello
If there is one thing I’ve learned about Jello gelatin, it’s this: The longer it takes to set up, the longer it takes to melt on a hot day. Interpretation: Allow your Jello to set up at room temperature (if you have enough time, that is!) and you can leave it out without worrying about it melting in the middle of your event...
My Dairy Foods Contest winner (daughter) made this recipe exactly as it is written below in a Bundt pan - and it was spectacular! But we have begun setting jello in small disposable cups when we have big gatherings with LOTS of children. Loose jello on a plate (especially if it is RED or ORANGE) is deadly on carpet and upholstery, so we set it in individual cups that children have an easier time with.
So... with our 4th of July celebration/barbecue tomorrow, I decided to set this fun salad in cups. It turned out really fun - and I’m going to top each cup with star-shaped mini marshmallows I found at Walmart. I haven’t seen them anywhere else - so Kudos to Walmart!
Ingredients:
2 (3-oz) packages Berry blue-flavored gelatin
2 (3-oz) packages Strawberry-flavored gelatin
4 cups Boiling water -- divided
2 1/2 cups Cold water -- divided
2 pkgs unflavored gelatin (Knox, or equivalent)
2 cups Milk
1 cup Sugar
2 cups Sour cream
2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
Directions:
In four separate bowls, dissolve each package of gelatin in 1 cup boiling water. Add 1/2 cup cold water to each and stir. Pour one bowl of blue gelatin into an oiled 10 inch fluted tube pan; chill until almost set, about 30 minutes. Set other 3 bowls of gelatin aside at room temperature.
Soften unflavored gelatin in remaining cold water; let stand 5 minutes. Heat milk in a saucepan over medium heat just below boiling. Stir in softened gelatin and sugar until sguar is dissolved. Remove from heat; stir in sour cream and vanilla until smooth.
When blue gelatin in pan is almost set, carefully spoon 1 1/2 cups sour cream mixture over it. Chill until almost set, about 30 minutes.
Carefully spoon one bowl of strawberry gelatin over cream layer. Chill until almost set. Repeat, adding layers of blue gelatin, cream mixture and strawberry gelatin, chilling in between each. Chill several hours of overnight.
Note: This salad takes time of prepare since each layer must be almost set before the next layer is added.
We had this recipe in our files about 15 years ago, but I found the
recipe text on CD Kitchen...
Patriotic Layered Jello

J-E-L-L-O... you can’t help but love it around any holiday. This is the recipe my daughter (now married with children of her own) won a state Dairy Foods Contest with years ago... WHAT dairy you ask? Well, there is dairy in the recipe (milk and sour cream) - but you don’t need that as an excuse to enjoy it this holiday... Cool, creamy, and very appealing on a hot July 4th. Be sure to start this a day before.
